These images are part of a larger drawing completed in 2005 commemorating the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschitz.

My father’s family were jewish and escaped from Germany in the 1930s. There was a BBC television program in 2005 presenting the story of Auschwitz concentration camp. One of the people interviewed was an old man who had been a guard there and sent back to Berlin all the possessions of the Jews. He justified himself by saying he didn’t actually kill anybody, but of course, also did nothing to help those who were about to be murdered.

The theme of my drawing is therefore, what would we do if we were caught up in such an awful regime? Do we possess the bravery to resist or would we, like him, be dragged along by the forces of history?
